What is a hyperlink

hyperlinkA hyperlink is a code that is used to link one web page to another. The code is hidden in the text or image placed on the page. This text or image can be a single word, a headline, a few lines of text, an image, a graphic or even a full page.

When a user clicks on the text or image link carrying the code, the user’s browser – which may be Internet Explorer, Mozilla, Chrome, Safari or any other — reads the web address contained in the code and connects the user to the web page hosted at that address.

It is this ability to link different elements on the net that makes Internet such a potent medium.

Elements of a hyperlink

A hyperlink code is like a web path, and is based on simple logic. It can also be called the web address of a page.

You will understand a hyperlink better when you break up the following hyperlink into its basic parts:

https://www.easymedia.in/category/public-relations/7-common-press-release-errors-to-avoid

In the above hyperlink,

1. http://www is the mandatory part of the web address.
2. easymedia.in is the name of the website where the web page is hosted.
3. category is the main folder where pages of different categories are stored
4. public-relations is the sub-folder where all reports related to the category public relations are stored
5. 7-common-press-release-errors-to-avoid is the title of the news report.

Since the web address of each page stored in the server is unique it is important that the web address should always be correct and complete. A missing letter, a missing full stop, a missing Boolean character like the plus mark or an extra character or word in the web address will confuse the server.

The server will be unable to locate the page because the address of the web page is wrong. It will then be left with no other option but to serve the message: Page not found.

So, please make sure that you enter the correct and complete hyperlink when searching for a news report.
