The Indian Readership Survey that establishes the readership of Indian newspapers and magazines was released by the Media Research Users Council on January 28, 2014.
The survey, which was much awaited by the print media because the last such exercise had been undertaken in 2012, once again establishes the numero uno status of Dainik Jagaran as the largest read newspaper in India with a readership base of 15.52 million.
Interestingly, the survey shows that there are five Hindi dailies in the list of top ten Indian newspapers by readership. These dailies are: Dainik Jagaran, Hindustan, Dainik Bhaskar, Rajasthan Patrika and Amar Ujala.
The only other Indian language which has more than two dailies in the top ten list is Malayalam daily. The two news dailies are: Malayam Manorama and Matrubhumi.
There is one English daily in this list — The Times of India; one Tamil daily – Daily Thanthi; and one Marathi daily – Lokmat.
