The reach of social networking sites in India has gone past e-mail now. This startling fact has been revealed in the report titled “The State of Internet with a Focus on India”.

The report that was presented by the ComScore Director in India Kedar Gavane shows that social networking sites reach 85% of India’s Internet users as compared to e-mail whose reach is 78%.

The only online category which has a wider reach than social networking in India is search. It is marginally ahead at 87%.

The next four categories by reach are: downloads (64%), community (61%), multimedia (61%) and directories/resources (59%).

The reach of news and information sites is a distant eighth.

The report also shows that social networking in India grew by a healthy 16% between March 2010 and March 2011. This outpaced the 2% growth recorded by social networking sites worldwide.

The growth in India was largely powered by Facebook whose India users jumped to 31.59 million in March 2011.

Equally interesting is the time spent by Indian users. The report says that Indian internet users spend 21% — that is one fifth — of their time on social networking sites,.
