The culture of free is not limited to news sites alone. It also engulfs social media.
Web users write their hearts out on blogs, spend hours on Facebook and Twitter, happily use the photo sites like Flickr.com to build family albums, but when it comes to paying they don’t want to.
According to a study conducted by Nielsen, “less than one in four consumers would consider paying to belong to a social community,”
The study that was conducted across 52 countries states:
– 80% of respondents are not willing to pay for blogs;
– 75% of respondents are not willing to pay for user-generated video;
– 72% of respondents are not willing to pay for podcasts.
This leaves the social media sites in a bind. They have to generate revenue through innovative methods if they have to survive.
Detailed findings of the survey that covered 27,000 consumers across 52 countries can be accessed by clicking here.
