The number of Indians accessing travel sites has jumped by almost 50 per cent in the last one year – from 9.39 million unique visitors in April 2009 to 14.06 million unique visitors in April 2010, a report released by comScore Media Metrix service says.
Now, one in every three Indians who is online visits the travel sites to book rail and air tickets and accommodation.
According to Will Hodgman, comScore executive vice president for the Asia-Pacific region: “Travel sites now attract more than one-third of India’s total Internet population, as more consumers are turning to the Web to fulfill their travel planning and booking needs.â€
Travellers are also getting price conscious, and actively comparing prices offered by different travel sites.
The highest trafficked travel site, as expected, was that of the Indian Railways. As many as 7.7 million unique visitors visited the site – a jump of 46% over last year.
Travel-booking site MakeMyTrip ranked second with 2.4 million visitors (up 39 percent) followed by Yatra Online with 1.9 million visitors (up 60 percent).
Several sites experienced triple-digit growth including Travelocity (up 134 percent to 812,000 visitors), IndiaRailInfo.com (up 340 percent to 647,000 visitors) and eRail.in (up 160 percent to 464,000 visitors).
