Sports traffic doubles in India, cricket sites dominate

Traffic to sports sites in India has doubled. According to a study released by comScore.com, the number of unique visitors to Indian sports sites leaped from 5.2 million visitors in January 2009 to 10.3 million visitors in January 2010.

The most visited sports site was Yahoo! Cricket. ESPN, which also own Cricinfo.com, came second (3.5 million visitors) and Sify Sports took the third spot (1.03 million visitors)

There were four cricket sites in the top ten: CricBuzz.com (640,000 visitors), CricketNirvana.com (523,000 visitors), KrishCricket.com (306,000 visitors) and Cricketnext (278,000 visitors).

There was also a sharp jump in audience engagement. The average Sports category visitor spent 30.1 minutes at sports sites, viewed 41 pages of content and visited the category nearly 6 times during the month.

*Excludes visitation from public computers such as Internet cafes or access from mobile phones or PDAs.
**ESPN includes CricInfo among other entities.
