Yahoo! News may be a news aggregator but it is India’s number one news site. The site was visited by 4.2 million unique visitors during October 2009, a jump of 26% when compared to October 2008, a study released by comScore.com states.
New York Times Digital was the second largest news destination visited by Indians. It recorded 3.9 million visitors in October 2009, a jump of 67% over October 2008. Clearly, it is the fastest growing international news destination in India.
The first Indian site to figure in the top 10 news destinations in India was The Times of India News site. It was third on the list with 2.6 million visitors in October 2009, a jump of 78% over October 2008.
The other Indian news destinations to figure in the Top Ten were: OneIndia.in (2.3 million visitors), The Hindu Group (1.55 million visitors), The Indian Express Group (1.24 million visitors), HT Media (1.15 million visitors), NDTV.com (1.10 million visitors) and The Economic Times (0.82 million visitors).
BBC, which is among the most trusted news sources in India, was ninth with its site attracting 0.99 million visitors.
The good news is that more Indians are now coming online to browse news. The news traffic in October 2009 stood at 15.8 million visitors, a leap of 37% over October 2008.
