The Google property that upset the Indian government most last year was Orkut. As many as 119 requests were made by the government for removal of Orkut content between July 1, 2009 to December 31, 2009.
The next largest request from the government was for content put up on You Tube. These requests numbered 15. In all, India made 142 content removal requests, and Google complied fully or partially with 77.5% requests.
The government also made 1061 data requests to Google during the same period seeking information about user accounts.
This information has been published by Google on its new website Government requests.
The purpose of the website as explained by Google is:
Like other technology and communications companies, we regularly receive requests from government agencies around the world to remove content from our services, or provide information about users of our services and products. The map shows the number of requests that we received between July 1, 2009 and December 31, 2009, with certain limitations.
Brazil tops the list of countries on both counts – data requests and removal requests. India is fourth on the list when it comes to data requests and third for removal requests.
